It was the incident which sparked a heated political debate, divided public opinion and led to the Australian government’s Pacific island solution. But ten years on, the political and moral remnants of that incident, when a Norwegian cargo boat rescued 400 mainly Afghan asylum seekers back in August 2001, remains. A forum organised by the Refugee Action Coalition came together on the tenth anniversary of the Tampa affair to call for the end of the Malaysia solution, three days before the high court ruled the policy invalid. Rashida Yosufzai reports.

Federal authorities say 25-year-old Sami Osmakac of Pinellas Park planned terror attacks in Tampa. He apparently targeted Ybor City nightclubs, bridges over the bay, and a sheriff’s office.
